Contemporary dance blends elements of ballet, jazz, and modern dance to create a dynamic and expressive style of movement. Students develop strong technical foundations while exploring creativity, musicality, improvisation, and fluid movement. Classes focus on strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and emotional expression through choreography that encourages dancers to move with confidence and authenticity.

Our contemporary classes inspire students to think creatively, connect with music, and express their individuality in a supportive and encouraging environment. Whether complementing ballet training or exploring a new style of dance, contemporary helps dancers build versatility, artistry, and performance skills that will benefit them across all dance disciplines.

What students learn in contemporary class

Contemporary classes work on floor work, weight transfer, improvisation and dynamic quality, alongside the strength and flexibility training that underpins the style. Dancers learn to generate movement from ideas and images, not just steps, which builds creative confidence that carries into choreography across every style they dance.

Contemporary levels at our school

Contemporary is offered for dancers ages 8 and up in our 2026-2027 season. Junior and Pre-Intermediate dancers train on Monday evenings at our Oakwood Village studio, and Teen and Senior dancers continue in our combined Lyrical and Contemporary class on Tuesdays. Contemporary pairs naturally with ballet training, and dancers who study both develop unusual versatility.

Why train contemporary at the Ontario School of Ballet

Contemporary at our school is grounded in more than four decades of classical training experience. Accredited dance educators teach small classes at 504 Oakwood Avenue in Oakwood Village, and dancers who show a spark for the style find opportunities to perform and to grow into our competitive programs.
