This powerful, high-energy dance style relies on a punchy beat and a little bit of attitude! Students will master individual moves before learning to build up to longer routines. The Hip Hop appeal is stronger than ever and students will love these dynamic classes.
Hip hop brings a different energy to the Ontario School of Ballet. It is athletic, current and expressive, and it gives dancers a style they recognize from music videos and social media, taught with the same care we bring to classical training.
What students learn in hip hop class
Hip hop classes teach foundations first: grooves, isolations, footwork and musicality. From there, dancers learn choreography that builds coordination, stamina and performance confidence. Students are encouraged to find their own style within the choreography, which makes hip hop a favourite for kids who want to move but do not see themselves in a leotard.
Hip hop levels for kids and teens
Our 2026-2027 program includes Primary, Junior, Pre-Intermediate, Senior and Teen/Senior hip hop classes, so beginners and experienced dancers each train at the right level. Most classes run on Friday evenings at our St Clair West studio, with additional Teen/Senior classes at Oakwood Village, which makes hip hop an easy addition to a dancer's weekly timetable or a great standalone starting point.
A dance school foundation, a street dance style
Training hip hop at a dance school has real advantages: accredited educators, structured progressions and small classes where dancers actually improve week over week. Many of our hip hop students also train in jazz or acro, and the athleticism transfers in both directions. Performance opportunities let hip hop dancers share the stage alongside our other programs.
