Lyrical dance for kids and teens
Lyrical dance combines the strong technical foundation of ballet with the fluidity and expressive qualities of jazz. Dancers learn to connect movement with music, using emotion, storytelling, and musicality to create captivating performances while continuing to develop strength, flexibility, balance, and control.
This class encourages students to explore artistic expression while building confidence and refining their technique. Through thoughtfully choreographed routines, dancers develop grace, creativity, and performance skills in a supportive and inspiring environment, making lyrical an excellent complement to ballet, jazz, and contemporary training.
What students learn in lyrical class
Lyrical classes work on extension, balance, control and expressive phrasing. Dancers learn to interpret the lyrics and melody of a song, sustain movement through transitions, and perform choreography that tells a story, with technical exercises drawn from ballet and jazz.
Taking lyrical and contemporary together
Junior/Pre-Intermediate Lyrical runs on Mondays from 5:00 to 6:00, and Junior/Pre-Intermediate Contemporary follows from 6:00 to 7:00 in the same studio, so dancers ages 8 to 11 can take both on the same evening. For ages 12 and up, the two styles come together in one Teen/Senior Lyrical/Contemporary class on Tuesdays.
Lyrical levels for ages 8 and up
Lyrical runs at two levels: Junior/Pre-Intermediate Lyrical for ages 8 to 11, and Teen/Senior Lyrical/Contemporary for ages 12 and up. Both classes meet once a week at our Oakwood Village studio.
